In an effort to debunk the mystery around the coronavirus vaccine, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went to Instagram on Saturday to explain details about the virus. Ocasio-Cortez spoke about the process of getting the vaccine, the documentation necessary, typical reactions some people may have and a general explanation of the vaccine all before getting the shot herself on video to prove that it is safe.
“I would never, ever ask you to do something I wasn’t willing to do myself. Yesterday, in accordance with national security protocols, Congress began to get vaccinated. I documented the entire process and am here to answer all of your questions to help you feel as comfortable as possible with your healthcare decisions,” Ocazio-Cortez said in the post’s caption.
Members of Congress have been urged to take the Pfizer vaccine and have joined thousands of health care workers across the nation in taking it beginning last week. Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Marco Rubio have both taken the vaccine. President-elect Joe Biden got his shot on Monday afternoon (Dec. 21) and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is set to get hers on Dec. 28.
Ocasio-Cortez explained how the mRNA vaccine works in a person’s body when they are inoculated.
“It’s kind of like the difference between if you had a burglar and then he broke into your house and you learn to fight him versus if someone gave you a picture of the burglar … if you see that picture and you see that guy walking towards your house, you’re like ‘oh I know that guy, he’s a burglar,’” she said.
