Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa Out for the Rest of the Season After Dislocating Hip

Alabama’s starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a very serious hip injury.

Tua—who was listed as a game-time decision, but started anyway—was injured with three minutes left in the first half of Saturday’s game (Nov. 16) against Mississippi State when he was brought down by two Bulldog defenders during a third-down play.

The Crimson Tide QB had a bloody nose and was seen not being able to put pressure on his right leg as he was helped off the field by trainers. The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel said the Heisman candidate could be heard “screaming in pain.”

The star QB was later airlifted back to Birmingham for CAT scans and MRIs, ESPN reported.

Alabama officials confirmed Saturday evening that Tagovailoa would be out for the rest of the season after suffering a dislocated hip.

The team released the following statement:

“Tua Tagovailoa sustained a right hip dislocation that was immediately reduced at the stadium. He is undergoing further testing to determine the best course of treatment. He is expected to make a full recovery but will miss the remainder of the season.”

This makes Tua Tagovailoa’s second major injury this year after hurting his ankle last month during the Tennessee game, which required him to have surgery and caused him to miss a game-and-a-half.

Tua returned for last week’s game against LSU, in which he threw for 418 yards and four touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Alabama from losing the game 46-41.

Now, Alabama, currently at No. 5 in the playoff rankings, is without their starting QB with two games remaining in the regular season and the playoffs just weeks away.
