Black-Owned Greeting Card Company Is Bringing Diversity To Holiday Cards

With the holiday season drawing closer, many will soon be shopping for cards to give to friends and family as a token of love. However, many cards lack diversity when it comes to representing different cultures with images that reflect themselves. One Atlanta-based Black female entrepreneur wanted to fix that problem so she created her own collection of unique cards with images from Black culture.

Dr. Dionne Mahaffey is the founder of Culture Greetings, a tech startup featuring holiday cards catering to Black people and other people of color. Consumers are able to pick out their cards and create personalized notes using their customized fonts ranging from birthdays, cultural holidays, and social justice.

“I had an idea and I built what I dreamed. But like a lot of small businesses, amplifying the brand and scaling can be challenging. Diligence and commitment are necessary to stay the course to grow the business. That’s what I am committed to doing,” said Mahaffey in an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE via email.

Each card is printed and mailed to the customer personally and Culture Greetings partnered with Walgreens to offer same-day printing services to its website. Mahaffey went on to say how the cards filled a much-needed niche after struggling to find cards for loved ones that represented her background.

“[Our cards] has married the classic touch of sending real cards in the mail with innovation.  Making multiple trips to the store and post office to send a card isn’t a viable option for most busy people [I] learned from personal experience and extensive research,” she added.

“Social media, while a convenient way to say Happy Birthday or congratulations, often fails at delivering a true personal connection. So, Culture Greetings merges the best of both worlds by marrying the traditional social interaction of greeting cards with 21st-century technology.”
