Kelly Rowland Shares the Hardest Part About Motherhood

In her career, Kelly Rowland has sold millions of records and won three grammys with her group Destiny’s Child. But even that level of work ethic couldn’t prepare her for life as a first-time mom. Rowland welcomed son Titan Jewel with husband Tim Weatherspoon in November 2015. With Titan now 14 months old, the “Motivation” singer has some sage advice about that all-important first year.

For starters, don’t stress about the baby weight. “Write on your mirror in lipstick: ‘I had a baby. I’m a superhero,’” the singer says in the latest issue of Parents. Both she and her little one are positively radiant on the cover, in which she wears a knit sweater dress that shows off her toned midsection. She tells the magazine that spinning and working out with a trainer are her go-tos to stay fit and healthy.

One of the biggest challenges she faced was not being able to breastfeed her son. “I had my heart set on breastfeeding, but I wasn’t producing enough milk. I got down on myself, which I think was mentally limiting my supply,” she admitted. Another was learning to let go of her perfectionist traits in favor of patience.

“I was nervous that I didn’t have the patience to be a good mom, because before Titan I had zero. But now I am very patient. The Bible verse ‘love is patient’ is real!” she said.

She also revealed that she “is closer with all of my girlfriends who are mothers,” including Beyoncé, adding,”I call them all for advice.” And she may need a little extra support with all the new projects she’s up to. Along with a guest role on Empire, the singer has a new singing competition series, Chasing Destiny, premiering on BET Networks in April, and she’s been recording tracks for her forthcoming album.

“I have always had maternal instincts, but as a mom you figure things out,” she said. “Now I trust myself and feel stronger, like I can do anything.”
