Senator Lindsey Graham Says Blacks ‘Can Go Anywhere in This State, You Just Need to Be Conservative, Not Liberal’

A South Carolina senator who is fighting to save his seat in the Senate has made a controversial statement about Black people and immigrants during a televised event according to The Guardian.

In a televised campaign event Republican United States senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina had stated that African Americans and immigrants can “go anywhere” in South Carolina but they “just need to be conservative.”

“Do I believe our cops are systemically racist? No. Do I believe South Carolina is a racist state? No. Let me tell you why. To young people out there, young people of color, young immigrants, this is a great state, but one thing I can say without any doubt, you can be an African American and go to the Senate but you just have to share our values” Graham said.

He went on to say: “If you’re a young, African American or an immigrant, you can go anywhere in this state, you just need to be conservative, not liberal.”

Graham, who is in the fight of his political life, is facing a tight reelection race against Jaime Harrison, a Black Democrat, where the two are in a virtual tie according to the latest poll numbers.

Harrison took to Twitter to respond.

Meanwhile, Harrison’s campaign has reported a record-shattering amount in a recent filing.

According to Politico, Harrison raised a staggering $57 million in the third quarter of this year, shattering the previous record for a Senate candidate as he seeks to unseat GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham.

“While Lindsey Graham continues playing political games in Washington, Jaime Harrison is remaining laser-focused on the real issues impacting people here — like health care, broadband access, and COVID relief for businesses and families,” said Guy King, a spokesperson for Harrison’s campaign. “After 25 years in Washington, Lindsey Graham has changed into someone voters no longer recognize, and these resources will be instrumental in our efforts to send Lindsey home in November.”
