Sonequa Martin-Green Sheds Happy Tears About Motherhood

It’s true what they say: bringing your child into this world completely changes your life. At least that’s what Sonequa Martin-Green wholeheartedly believes. The Walking Dead actress welcomed her son Kenric Justin Green II in January, and she can hardly contain herself when speaking about motherhood. In a recent feature for Good Housekeeping’s November issue, the 30-year-old said the experience has been “enlightening.”

“It’s really been divine having someone come from you and being responsible for their livelihood, for nurturing them,” she said. “My heart just melts as I speak about it, and frankly, I think words can’t really describe it when I try. It’s almost going to make me cry.”

Not only has parenting made her marriage with husband Kenric Green stronger, but having a child of her own has also made her appreciate her mother even more.

“[My mother] would always tell us how much she loved us and how she would be willing to do anything for us, and every now and then she would say, ‘You’ll get it one day,’ ” Martin-Green said. “Now I think of her and I tell her about it all the time. I just say, ‘I get it now, Mama, I get it.’ How much I love this boy I can now also redirect it and understand that she loves me in that same way.”
