Vickie Johnson Signs On As Head Coach Of Dallas Wings

The Dallas Wings have reportedly hired Vickie Johnson to be their next head coach, according to The Athletic.

With her new position, Johnson is the only Black woman currently holding a head coach position in the WNBA, which is made up of nearly 70 percent Black players.

The Wings fired Brian Agler as coach after they missed the playoffs with an 8-14 season.

Johnson was previously an assistant coach with the Las Vegas Aces, where she helped get the team to the 2020 WNBA Finals. They were eventually swept by the Seattle Storm.

Johnson was also an assistant with the San Antonio Stars from 2011-16 and was named head coach for 2017. The Stars relocated to Las Vegas that offseason and Johnson was demoted to an assistant position after the team went 8-26.

The number of women in general coaching in the WNBA has dipped over the years, however at least one Black woman has always held the position at any given time. According to Lindsey Gibbs at PowerPlays, the head coaches of the other 11 teams in the league are four women, two Black men and five white men.
