NFL’s DeAngelo Williams Gifts Screenings for Breast Cancer

NFL player DeAngelo Williams is set on bringing attention to breast cancer prevention. The 32-year-old Pittsburgh Steelers running back lost his mother and four aunts to the disease, and now he wants to prevent more women from dying by offering to pay for mammograms. His mother, Sandra Hill, died last year at the age of 53, and so Williams will donate money to treat 53 women to breast screenings.

The mammograms will take place in hospitals in Pittsburgh and Charlotte, North Carolina (Williams used to play for the Carolina Panthers). His organization, the DeAngelo Williams Foundation, has pledged to cover the costs for 53 mammograms and will continue to fund-raise for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. His foundation has raised $500,000 to date for the breast cancer organization.

“It’s not just about October for me; it’s not just a month, it’s a lifestyle,” Williams said about Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “It’s about getting women to recognize to get tested.”

Sadly, his attitude is causing issues between him and the NFL as he wants to continue wearing pink long after Breast Cancer Awareness month is through. NFL rules state that players can wear pink accessories only during the month of October as a way of bringing attention to the cause.
