Ari Lennox Says She’s Quitting Music After Losing Soul Train Awards to H.E.R., Lizzo, Chris Brown & Drake: “I’ll Join the Damn Army!”

Ari Lennox says she’s done with the music industry after being snubbed at the Soul Train Awards.

The 2019 Soul Train Awards aired live on TV Sunday night (Nov. 17).

Though Ari was nominated for Best R&B/Soul Female Artist, Album/Mixtape of the Year, and Best Collaboration Performance, she lost to H.E.R., Lizzo, and Chris Brown (featuring Drake), respectively.

After the show, Ari Lennox vented on Twitter about being snubbed from the Soul Train Award, making it clear that her feelings were crushed.

In a series of tweets Monday morning, Ari said that her debut album, Shea Butter Baby, which was released back in May, “will always be special.”

She continued: “I made a soul album for black people. I made my album for black people. But I don’t understand. At all actually. But cool. I want this sh*t way more than it wants me. I’m learning I have to stop caring. Yea I’m hurt. I’m not built for these things lmao.”

Ari addressed her earlier tweets later on Monday, saying: “It’s not an ungrateful energy. It’s not ego. I’m sorry people view my tweets in that manner. I just really cared about this one. If ball players can get upset about losing so can I. This was simply something I’ve always wanted.”

She added: “My heart is just really in this sh*t and I can’t not say something. I’m grateful for all the people who f*ck with SBB. I love you guys more than you’ll ever know.”

Ari deleted those tweets, but returned to Twitter Tuesday (Nov. 19) with another rant once again about her disappointment in not winning a single Soul Train Award, which to her is a big deal because her music is considered R&B/Soul.

“It’s not just an award. It wasn’t any award show. It was the Soul Train Awards,” Ari tweeted. “As you can see I’m big fan of soul music and huge fan of Soul Train’s History.”

Ari said she expected other awards shows to snub her, but not the Soul Train Awards.

“Being snubbed was something I always expected and was definitely prepared for just not by them,” she wrote. “Everytime I wrap my mind around it I just can’t accept it. It feels like a break up. I made a soulful album. I never ran from who I am. I just expected that one platform to understand that.”

Ari added: “It takes a lot of energy to do these things and ultimate this was a hard loss for me … I’m not selling out so I quit.”

Many people took her expressing her disappointment as having a sense of entitlement or being “butthurt” over losing an award, but Ari says that’s not the case at all … she says she worked hard to create a body of work and expected to be recognized for it.

“You know what I realized? People who genuinely f**k with me understand my frustration,” she said. “People who are self hating haters and clearly have never given my music a chance got the biggest problem with me always.”

Ari also had a message for the people saying they were annoyed about her constantly complaining about what seems like non-important things from the outside looking in.

“No one will have to worry about me complaining after this current complaint,” she said. “Lol what I will not do is ever be this depressed again … My intent is never to annoy people who clearly don’t f**k with me, I don’t be asking these shady blogs to post what I write.

“Me being honest doesn’t make me less gracious or less star worthy … To all those annoyed with me, you got it. I won’t lose my mind over this sh*t. I will save my sanity first. I’ll join the damn army. Tired of being annoying tired of being annoyed. I just ain’t built like the rest of them. This sh*t ain’t for me.

“It’s clear I’m not ‘cool’ enough. Not trendy enough and I don’t care to be. I don’t strive for that. I’m not going to chase this sh*t ever again. No more fake sh*t on my part.”
