Woman With World's Longest Locs Marries Her Hairdresser

Asha Mandela, a Guinness Book of World Records holder, was used to carrying her 55-foot long, 42-pound dreads on her own. Now, her load has become a little bit lighter after she married Emmanuel Chege, a Kenyan hairstylist.

Chege fell for Mandela, 50, after he saw her record-breaking locks online three years ago. He decided to get in contact with Asha, and when she was visiting Kenya on business months later, the two immediately felt sparks.

“It was so amazing to see all this amount of hair. It was more than my imagination,” Chege remembered. “At first I thought maybe her locks were almost to her knees or on the ground, but the first glance when I saw her hair, it was so long, so it was so amazing and her beauty was so amazing too.”

The two married eight months after meeting and now Mandela has entrusted her hair care to the man who loves her, and her hair, the most. Chege, who has worked as a stylist for over 15 years, spends two full days washing and drying his wife’s hair, and the braided locks require around-the-clock upkeep.

“My husband helps me with everything with my hair. I’m so spoiled since he’s been taking care of it and I’ve got totally lazy,” Mandela joked, adding. “He will massage my scalp, groom my hair or twist or wash it. He does a really good job of taking care of it so that’s a plus.”

Chege explained that his own locks are deeply rooted to his spirituality. “It gives me a lot of positive energy and a lot of positive vibration — it’s like my antennas to the spiritual world.” Adding, “I’m Rastafarian, and locs symbolizes a lot.”

Chege also mentioned that the hair “adds up to some spices, you know, in our love life.”

Now, Chege says he’s been inspired by his wife to go after the male record for longest locs. They are even talking about preserving their locs legacy, saying, “If we are blessed with children, no comb is going to go on their head.”
