Bryshere Y. Gray’s year couldn’t have been better. For starters, his show Empire was a ratings juggernaut, earning both Grammy and Golden Globe nods this week. But the 22-year-old Philadelphia native has his sights set on a certain web-slinging superhero.
Appearing in a Spider-Man themed photo shoot for Paper Magazine, the actor campaigns to become the first African-American to channel Peter Parker on screen.
“I’m young and pretty and I represent the youth in America and speak to them in a way no one can at this time. I’m the American Idol,” he tells the magazine. “And I like to climb and fly through the sky and also would look amazing in the Spider-Man outfit.”
It’s hard to argue with him, being that he is one of Hollywood’s hottest young stars at the moment. There’s been some talk about creating a film around Miles Morales, a biracial Brooklyn teen who replaced Parker in a storyline from Marvel’s Ultimate universe. Marvel Studios has confirmed that it will re-launch the Spidey franchise with Sony, but it’s anybody’s guess who will actually don that iconic red suit when it happens.
Actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield previously portrayed the beloved crime fighter on the big screen, while newcomer Tom Holland nabbed the role in the forthcoming Captain America: Civil War.
